Description
HE'S DRUNK, SCARRED BY WAR, AND OUT OF IDEAS. BUT ONE THING'S STILL ON HIS TO-DO LIST -- STOP A NUCLEAR ATTACK ON A DEADLINE...
Before the month ends, a nuclear bomb will be detonated in an American city. The CIA knows that much, but not where the bomb is or who has it. One other guy knows too, because he knows more than anyone else about the man who bought the bomb -- Manny Granov, Warlord of Wall Street.
In this fast-moving political thriller, our hero Jackson Guild, an investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, suddenly finds himself with the FBI "so far up my nose their boots were on my chin." They want him for a "bait-boy" and plenty of sharks are circling, in particular a couple of shadowy figures with multiple names, thick dossiers, and unknown origins.
Without a backward look, feds throw him into the tank. As he races to gain traction, names and players change, the ground shifts beneath his feet, and nothing is as it seems, leaving the reader barely able to flip the pages fast enough.
Shear's knowing spy story is non-stop action, adventure, and suspense from Page One to the last chilling sentence, told in a savvy insider voice that's almost frighteningly authentic. You can't help thinking. "Is it really that scary out there?
The world thinks the Wall Street Warlord is a simple Ponzi artist like Bernie Madoff, but he's got $65 billion to play with and tentacles in every country that needs weapons. Guild knows he used some of that dirty money to buy the missing nuclear bomb that's about to bring on Armageddon. But who did he sell it to?
Guild doesn't know whether he's up against the Russian mob, the Russian government, the Saudis, Iran, or even Israel. What he does know: his apartment's been searched and burglarized, his friends are getting killed, and he's being manipulated by his own government.
Oh, and two other two problems: he's clueless about spycraft and he's pretty much operating through a haze of alcohol. Tough for Guild, but great news for thriller fans! With odds stacked like that, you just know a wild ride awaits.
If you're more fond of Smiley than Bond, this is your kind of intelligence novel. Fans of spy books of the less glitzy type, like those by Graham Greene, Len Deighton, John Le Carre, and Fredrick Forsyth, will devour this one and come back for more! But Bourne, Bond, and Jack Ryan fans will also love the good writing and fast action.
